Below are recommendations for industry partners on how to adapt to the changing role of CMOs and navigate ambulatory partnerships/clinical applications of AI:
1. Evolving their role: Transitioning from a dominant focus on clinical leadership into one that has more formal executive oversight into strategy, operations, population health, and growth.
2. Developing ambulatory partnerships: To improve access and support growth, CMOs are seeking provider partners in the ambulatory space to support gaps in care in behavioral health, radiology, physical therapy, endocrinology, and women’s health, among others. CMOs seek partners who are aligned on mission and are willing to expand their purview beyond specific specialties.
3. Assessing clinical applications of AI: CMOs recognize the need to embrace AI-enabled innovation but feel daunted by organizational readiness and identifying the right solutions. They are sharing evaluation frameworks that help 1) assess readiness for digital transformation, 2) ensure solutions solve the right problem, for the right consumer, and 3) prioritize which initiatives to pursue.
4. Aligning independent and employed physicians on strategy: To succeed in making the health systems the best place for clinicians to practice and stave off the threat of disruptors to recruitment, health system like Advocate are developing robust MSO models to provide wellness resources and transparent communication to support the physician workforce and ensure everyone is aligned on value-based care and equity initiatives.
5. Redoubling efforts to improve access and capacity: Leading operational practices to reduce the length of stay and seeking creative solutions to increase access, including virtual providers and technology assistance (e.g., chatbots, etc.)
6. Seeking ways to continue to improve both physician well-being and patient experience: CMOs feel that they need to make continued progress on ensuring seamless care delivery and patient experience while providing physicians tools and resources to deliver on that. They are relying on innovative automation/AI tools, seamless EHR integration of technology, and mental health resources to get there.
