Executive Summary

Nebraska Medicine, a two hospital system based in Omaha, NE, is projected to experience their present nursing shortage through 2025. Jill Tune, BSN, RN, the Manager of Acute Care Support at Nebraska Medicine , created a new inpatient care model with a paramedic role to support the nursing team on the trauma unit. The new model added 1 paramedic per shift, who pairs with one RN to care for 7 8 patients. The initial pilot successfully improved capacity and reduced nursing stress. With the support of other hospital leaders, Jill expanded the RN paramedic care model to a medical unit within Nebraska Medical Center, with plans to scale further across 2023.
